Spartanburg Regional Health System’s school-based telehealth program at B.D. Lee Elementary School in South Carolina provides students with convenient access to medical care during the school day.
How the program works:
Virtual Visits: Students meet with a healthcare provider virtually using a dedicated telehealth cart. The school nurse is physically present with the student to assist with the examination, which can include checking ears, throats, and listening to lungs (0:15-0:42, 2:06-2:22).
Scope of Care: The service focuses on mild acute conditions such as ear infections, sore throats, and poison ivy (0:42-1:00).
Accessibility: This program is particularly beneficial for students in rural or underserved areas where traveling to a primary care office or urgent care center can be difficult (1:36-1:56).
Benefits for families:
Reduced Stress: Parents can avoid taking time off work, which helps manage family stress (1:56-2:06).
Quality Care: Parents report feeling reassured that their children receive the same quality of care through the school program as they would at a traditional pediatrician's office (2:41-2:58).
Time Efficiency: By keeping students in school, they often only miss 20 to 30 minutes of class rather than a whole day or half-day for an appointment (3:00-3:21).
