Superintendent Weaver Announces Institute of Innovation's Bekah Hamrick as Teacher of the Year Finalist

This year's state Teacher of the Year ceremony will take place next month in Columbia

GAFFNEY, S.C. - State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver surprised Institute of Innovation's Bekah Hamrick today with news that she has been selected as one of five finalists for the South Carolina Teacher of the Year award.

“Bekah’s heart-felt passion to provide equal opportunities and experiences for students in special education was born out of her love for her brother Zach, who has Down Syndrome," said Superintendent Weaver. "Bekah’s deep investment in the Workers in Training, a program she redesigned, is improving educational and career options for these amazing students. This and her mentorship of other special education teachers is nothing short of inspirational. It’s a true honor to celebrate Bekah as a finalist for state Teacher of the Year.”

Hamrick teaches the Workers in Training (WIT) program at Cherokee County School District's Institute of Innovation. The program is designed for students with disabilities, ages 18-21, focused on vocational and daily living skills. Hamrick is a graduate of Appalachian State University, she holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Adapted Special Education with an add on in mild to moderate disabilities. She is currently enrolled at Louisiana State University pursuing a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership: Special Education.

"Congratulations to Mrs. Hamrick on this phenomenal award,” said Dr. Carl Carpenter, Cherokee County School District Acting Superintendent. “She takes pride in guiding each child’s special journey of discovery and growth. Bekah has the heart and the unique ability to connect with students that have special needs. Cherokee County School District is proud that she has been selected as a South Carolina Teacher of the Year finalist."

Hamrick's brother, Zach, whom has Down Syndrome, was the greatest factor influencing her to become a Special Education teacher. Her desire for Zach to be included; with equal opportunities and experiences in education and career, fueled her determination to make a difference. His hardships, inspired her to improve educational and career options for students with special needs.

One of the greatest contributions Hamrick has made to public education is the redesign of the WIT program. She fosters relationships, promoting acceptance, awareness, and inclusion. Her development of community relationships provides valuable, competitive, employment experiences and opportunities. Hamrick's students take part in a school-based enterprise which allowed them the opportunity to attend an overnight beach excursion in 2023, a new experience for most.

As one of five finalists, Hamrick will receive $10,000 and go on to the next stage of competition which involves an interview with a team of expert judges. The winner will be announced at the South Carolina Teacher of the Year Celebration on April 25th in Columbia.

The winner receives a total of $25,000 and is provided with a brand-new BMW to use while serving for one year as a roving ambassador providing mentoring, attending speaking engagements, working with Teacher Cadets and Teaching Fellows, leading the State Teacher Forum, and serving as the state spokesperson for over 64,000 educators.
